The police are investigating the case of a Muslim family killed in Canada. It was a hate-motivated car attack in London. Ont. The Muslim community is in horror and shock. The car attack killed four family members and left a young boy injured. Advocates demanded justice. They urge the government to bring about a change that will end hate crimes against Muslims in Canada. Community leader Nawaz Tahir told CTV News Channel: “Our hearts are broken, our minds numb with pain…These were innocent human beings who were killed simply because they’re Muslim.”
Muslim Family Killed in Canada
The suspect is a 20-year-old who allegedly drove a pickup truck into the family around 08:40 p.m. on Sunday. The attack killed a 74-year-old woman, a 46-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, and a 15-year-old girl. A nine-year-old boy survived with injuries.
Amira Elghawaby, a human rights advocate, noted: “To be targeted in this way — a grandmother, a mother, and father, and young daughter killed so senselessly. While the young boy, who is set to survive now, has lost his family. My hands have been shaking for much of the day since I’ve heard this news.”
Ed Holder, the city’s mayor, described the attack as the worst mass killing London has experienced. The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) qualified it as a terror attack.
Anti-Muslim Violence in Canada
In fact, anti-Muslim violence has hit numerous communities across Canada. On Jan 29, 2017, a man killed six worshipers in a mosque in Quebec City. In September 2020, a man stabbed Mohamed-Aslim Zafis to death in Toronto, and earlier in 2021, young Muslim girls and Black women were targeted for hate-motivated attacks.
Moreover, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he supports the victims of the tragedy. He told the Muslim community that the hate is insidious and despicable. In addition, Trudeau said he would use every tool to combat Islamophobia.
